Oh boy! Check out how rad comics are!

Color me!

Hey everybody! Let's do something fun. Copy this b/w version of the Stan Sakai Staplegator and take a crack at coloring it.

STAPLE! exhibitors can post their efforts here on the official STAPLE! blog, everyone else can put it on their Myspace, Facebook or whatever. I expect to see some cool stuff.

Speaking of Myspace and Facebook, you can find STAPLE! pages at these links:

Funny Misshapen Preview

I just got a couple advance galley copies of my upcoming book "Funny Misshapen Body"... the book won't be out until April 7, so not in time for STAPLE, unfortunately, but I'll bring the galley copies along for anyone who wants to take a look...

Love from the Quick

I was featured in this week's Quick, Dallas magazine-format newspaper, on page 9 (pdf). You can see the online version of the interview here.

In addition, Quick's blog asked for my opinion on comic book film adaptations. It's particularly topical considering today's Oscar snubbing of Dark Knight (in case you didn't hear).

It's okay if you want to read this.

Staple! is easily one of my favorite shows, and the missus and I are eagerly looking forward to attending again this year! Well, I am at least. She's looking forward to dropping me off at the convention center as early as possible before savoring the numbing combo of boutique hopping and prescription cough syrup. In my defense, she knew that she was marrying a guy who had contributed cartoons to Swank before the wedding, and she went through with it anyway. Whatever, I don't care.

This year at the show I hope to have copies of the issue of Mad with my comic strip, Unpleasant Aftertaste Comics, but I'm not sure it will have been released by then. If not, I still have other copies of Mad, plus some National Lampoon books, copies of Hustler Humor (not sold to people under eighteen, but they can flip through a copy for two dollars) and my cartoon collection, Dammit! I Swallowed Another One! I'll also have copies of a new book, more of a booklet sort of thing really, titled VooDoo Tampon. This will be a convention-only special with a couple of dozen or so cartoons that make a genuine attempt to be unsavory, including the cartoon that the then Cartoon Editor of Hustler told me was "too gross" for any of the Hustler line of magazines (to be honest, it's not really THAT bad; maybe they were having an off day?).

The truth of the matter is that a little of me, and my material, goes a long way, so that should be plenty to keep you busy. If you'd like to take a gander at my cartoons, and thereby make the wise decision to make a wide berth around my table at the show, allow me to direct you to www.kitlively.com. Thankyou for your time.

Red Handed Studios confirmed!

Hey folks! I just got my confirmation email and invite to this blog so I figured why not come on over and introduce myself! My name is Cary Kelley and I'm the writer/creator/letterer of a book called Fallen Justice that we're publishing under my new home, Red Handed Studios. The book features art by Harold Edge, who broke into comics with Sixgun Samurai by Alias comics, and the stunning colors of Ross Hughes. It's seven issues long, published bi-monthly starting in February, and is already getting good reviews! Check out what Project Fanboy had to say here: Fallen Justice #1 review. Here's just a sample of Harold's work on one of the promo pieces he's turned in:

To see more of the great art work as well as learn some more about the story and characters, head on over to our website, Red Handed Studios.com

We'll have the first issue ready to go for STAPLE! and we might go ahead and print some advance copies of issue 2 as well as a bunch of other cool stuff! Can't wait to see you there!

Alternative Media Expo '09 Updates!

The Alternative Media Expo is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st at the warehouse in the Contemporary Arts Center, from 12-6pm. Table space is still available ($25 for 4ft; $35 for 8ft), as are sponsorship packages. Questions? Reply to this e-mail and I'll answer as soon as possible.

Hello everyone in STAPLE! land,

I hope your New Year's went well! With STAPLE! coming up quickly, I thought I'd catch your attention with some updates on STAPLE!'s sister show over in New Orleans, the Alternative Media Expo.

Just a quick programming note: If you're planning to exhibit, please sign up ASAP! Many people like to wait until close to the Expo, but if things move along at last year's pace we might sell out of space, so don't lose out! Plus it helps us plan for food vendors, etc...

So, onto the big news. The biggest news is the official addition of two Expo shows:

The Alternative Media Expo Fashion Show Presented by Dirty Coast [Plus a live art extravaganza] @ One Eyed Jacks on Friday, March 20th

One of the Expo's sponsors, Dirty Coast, is helping plan this immense fashion show that will feature pieces by as many fashion exhibitors as we can cram in. We'll focus on three designers and then work in at least one piece by each of the remaining exhibitors.

If you're interested in having your work featured in the fashion show, you must sign up for the Expo by February 16th. We're looking for jewelry and other accessories, so if you design those, don't feel left out!

Let me know ASAP if you're interested, because the earlier we can start organizing the better. The Dirty Coast fashion shows are always hits, and I think this is a great way to get some new people interested in the Expo and another way to expose you guys to a new audience!

Also, you artists can get ready, because we're going to have art being created live onstage throughout the night. Basically, we'll have artists rotating three at a time, drawing and painting on boards behind the models. If you're an artist and are interested in participating, let me know ASAP because these spots will be limited.

The Alternative Media Expo Post-Party w/ Ballzack and The Buttons @ One Eyed Jacks on Saturday, March 21st

After this year's Expo, we'll re-gather at One Eyed Jacks to watch two great local acts--pretty cool way to close the Expo stretch.

Here are some links for you:

The Alternative Media Expo website.

The Expo '09 Event Invite. (RSVP and let everyone know you're exhibiting!)

The Expo '09 Sign-Up card.

Thanks everyone, and I'm looking forward to this being the best Expo ever. I hope to see all our Austinites in New Orleans, and I'll see you this March at STAPLE!
