Kevin Eastman at STAPLE!

We are super-exicted to announce that Kevin Eastman will be appearing at STAPLE!

Kevin Eastman is best known as the creator (together with Peter Laird) of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Kevin and Peter first self-published TMNT in 1984, it was an almost overnight success, and quickly went onto become one of the most successful comics franchises of all time, spawning cartoons, movies, toys, games a concert tour and myriad other merchandise and tie-ins. In 2011, the beloved reptilian heroes debuted an all-new series published by IDW, with Eastman leading the creative team.

Eastman founded the creator-friendly Tundra Publishing in 1990, which put out many notable and critically acclaimed works from a variety of talented creators. He has appeared in a number of feature films and documentaries, and voiced a cartoon version of himself in the 2009 animated TV film Turtles Forever. Kevin is also the current owner, editor and publisher of the magazine Heavy Metal. We are super-stoked to have him appearing at STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo! Cowabunga!

Slap Happy Comix Debut at STAPLE!

My latest book, Slap Happy Comix, will be debuting at STAPLE! 2012. This will be my fifth year in a row exhibiting at STAPLE! and each year I head down to Austin for the show I like to have something new for all the great crowds that turn out for this indie friendly event. This year I'm working in full color for the first time and I am eager to see what people think of the book. Along with all the cartoony hijinks inside the book itself I will also have several full color prints on display and for sale based on all the new artwork in the comic.

Just thought I'd show off one of my latest.. .

This is from Brittany, France, done from a picture I took during my last trip there in the Fall of 2007.
The tower is call "Solidor", or "Tour Solidor", and it is in St. Servan - St. Malo, on the northern coast. We spent many a days in the area as kids.

Accept the challenge — be a part of 24 Hour Comics Day 2011. Join 7000 BC and make a 24-page comic book pages in 24 consecutive hours. No experience or special skills needed — this free creative exercise is open to everyone.

Test your stamina and learn you what you're capable of, along with thousands of artists of all skill levels from around the globe. Albuquerque has consistently been one of the largest gatherings in the world for this international event. See photos from past years here and here.

This year's location is Media Arts Collaborative Charter School (MACCS) in Albuquerque, at 4401 Central Ave. N.E. If you plan on participating, please send an email so we can get a count of participants.

7000 BC will hold its monthly meeting at Collected Works Bookstore, a landmark independent bookshop and coffeehouse in Santa Fe. 7000 BC is pleased to be a part of the inaugural Albuquerque Comic Expo, New Mexico’s premier comic book, pop culture and entertainment event.

For the first time ever, some of the biggest names in comics will join publishers, dealers, gamers, collectors, fan organizations, and more at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

This is our chance to build a major comic convention in New Mexico, so show your support and attend.

7000 BC will have a booth on the main floor, and many of our members and friends will have tables in Artist Alley. We'll be updating our site with a list of can't-miss comic creators, writers, and artists as the convention gets closer.

The first Albuquerque Comic Expo will be held June 24–26 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. There's a terrific list of guests and exhibitors — and the Artist Alley is shaping up to be a great crowd.

7000 BC is encouraging our small press colleagues to join us at the show and make a strong showing for independent comics. Many of our members have their own tables, but 7000 BC will have a booth on the main show floor — and we plan on using it to show comics from our friends and point attendees to their table.

There's registration info on the site — but we've got special pricing, so please send an email and/or leave a comment if you're interested.

We’re only a few short days away from the Sixth Annual STAPLE! Independent Media Expo! That’s right! The festivities start THIS weekend!

As always, we’re kicking things off in style with the traditional pre-party Meet and Greet at Austin Books and Comics, 5002 North Lamar Boulevard, this Friday, March 5th at 8pm. This is a great chance to chat with all your favorite STAPLE! Guests and Exhibitors in a casual setting at one of the best comic shops in the country.

Then Saturday morning, March 6, it’s STAPLE! Doors open at 11am, the show ends at 7pm and there’s great Programming all day! It starts off with two Q&A sessions: Guy Davis (BPRD, The Marquis) at noon, Andy Runton (Owly) at 1:30. Next up is a presentation by Chris Schweizer (Crogan’s Adventures) entitled “Twenty Common Cartooning Mistakes, and How to Avoid Them”, at 3pm. Last, but certainly not least, at 4:30 it’s an amazing performance of The Intergalactic Nemesis: The Living Comic Book – must be seen to be believed!

As if that weren’t enough, the party keeps on going that night at the Shangri-La, 1016 E 6th St. (just EAST of I-35) with the STAPLE! After Party Live Art Show and benefit for KOOP Radio, with DJ Digg, DJ LD and NET WT! Doors at 8, show starts at 10pm.

I don't believe a hero is going to save us

At STAPLE last year I had a conversation with Will Terrell. He picked up a comic he was selling and said he'd drawn the whole thing in under 8 hours. He'd started a 24 hour comic, got 16 hours into it, and decided it wasn't what he wanted to do. So he did this one in the remaining time. He said he can draw a comic he sells for $3 in less than a day, but writing one takes him months.

And that got me thinking. I'm a designer of roleplaying and storytelling games; I'm good at engineering structures that inspire storytelling (see Bacchanal for an example). What if I designed something that helped artists create stories for webcomics?

And so I am. It's a deck of cards called The Well of Else. And I'll have my in-progress prototype at STAPLE to show off (we're at table 59, Half Meme Press & Cream Alien Games).

Here's how it works. You turn over a card and it tells you how to advance your story based on the cards you've already played out, based on the characters you've created, their personalities, and their relationships. If certain conditions aren't satisfied, you move down to the next instruction. There are several levels on each card. You'll either hit one with conditions you've satisfied, or you'll discard and draw another card. Maybe you create a new character. Maybe something transpires among characters you created previously. Have it happen in your webcomic. Trust the cards. They've got your back.

And they know the truth and lies of heroism. They set the monomyth aside, as a pattern in fiction with no relevance to how, say, America achieved independence, and create stories of epic cultural change that feel more like history than like Hollywood.

Anyway, here are some reasons to stop by table 59 for conversation:

The prototype cards are really really text heavy.

My goal for the next prototype is to have a vocabulary of iconic cartoons instead of text. If you're good at creating iconic graphics from text, I want to talk to you.

If you have creative energy from frustrations working under corporate leadership, I want to talk to you.

If you know anything about the relationship between George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, I want to talk to you.

If you aspire to having an ongoing webcomic, and you think you might want to help me understand how well the cards are working by giving them a try, I definitely want to talk to you.

Last year we premiered his sketchbooks, and now we've got the first three issues of his anthology of weird and creepy tales. Each one features a few self-contained stories and some guest writers, but all with the dramatic, stylized art that characterizes his work.

I’m very pleased and excited to announce two more great guests at STAPLE! - Chris Schweizer and Jason Neulander!

Chris Schweizer is the author of the "Crogan's Adventure" series of graphic novels, including the Eisner-nominated "Crogan's Vengeance" and the recently-released "Crogan's March," available in the spring from Oni Press. Each graphic-novel in the series features a look at a different member of the historic Crogan family, a bloodline chock full of swashbuckling adventurers, gunfighters, pilots, spies, ninjas, and smugglers. Chris is also a full professor of Sequential Art and Animation at the Atlanta branch of the Savannah College of Art and Design, and his comics have been published by Oni Press, Top Shelf Productions, Image Comics, Evil Twin Comics, and Nickelodeon Magazine, among others. Chris will be presenting an entertaining and educational cartooning lecture as part of the programming for this year's STAPLE!

Jason Neulander is the producer, director, and co-creator of The Intergalactic Nemesis, a radio drama that got its start as a lark at Little City Espresso Bar and Cafe in Austin back in 1996 and since then has played sold-out shows at the Paramount and Hogg Auditoriums and toured to 30 cities and towns across the US. He also created the two sequels Return of the Intergalactic Nemesis and The Intergalactic Nemesis: Twin Infinity. With the "living comic book" version, Neulander has taken the artwork for the comic book series he scripted and combined it with the live show. The artwork, by Austin artist Tim Doyle (mrdoyle.com), is projected panel by panel as three actors, one foley artist, and one musician perform the story live. The Intergalactic Nemesis: The Living Comic Book is going to be performed in its entirety at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Labor Day weekend 2010 and next year's Fantastic Fest.

The January 7000 BC meeting will be held Saturday, January 23 in the Community Room at the Santa Fe Library Main Branch, 1:30–4:00. After the meeting, we'll move on to dinner. We'll be making all sorts of plans for this year's activities and welcome everyone interested in creating and self-publishing comics.

The library is in downtown Santa Fe and there's limited, paid (but cheap) parking in the back, street and lot parking around, and possibly the lot across Washington Street at the First Interstate Building will be open. The library is on a stop for the Santa Fe Pick-Up and the meeting's timed for those taking the train from Albuquerque.

Andy Runton at STAPLE!

We are very pleased and excited to announce that Andy Runton will be appearing at STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo!

Andy is the creator of the breakout all-ages series of graphic novels, Owly, published by Top Shelf, which features a kind little vegetarian owl who's always searching for new friends and adventure. Relying on a mixture of symbols, icons, and expressions to tell his silent stories, Runton's work showcases both his gift for characterization and his love of wildlife and the outdoors. His animated and heartwarming style has made him a favorite of both fans and critics alike. The Owly series has earned him multiple awards including the Howard E. Day Memorial Prize, the Harvey Award, two Ignatz Awards, and the 2006 Eisner Award for "Best Publication for a Younger Audience". Guy Davis at STAPLE!

Hey everybody!

We here at STAPLE! HQ are very pleased to announce that Guy Davis will be appearing at STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo!

Michigan artist Guy Davis has been working away in comics since 1985 on a variety of titles from his creator owned books Baker Street and The Marquis; to company series including Sandman Mystery Theatre, Fantastic Four: Unstable Molecules, The Nevermen and The Zombies That Ate the World. Other works have included conceptual design for role-playing games and multimedia projects, including designs for the animated television pilot for The Amazing Screw-On Head and animated comics for both the Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2 DVDs.

Currently Guy is the artist on Mike Mignola's ongoing B.P.R.D. series (work which won him a 2009 Eisner Award for Best Penciller/Inker), along with continuing his creator owned series The Marquis for Dark Horse Comics.

Just a couple quick announcements of very important information. The sixth annual STAPLE! Independent Media Expo is ON and scheduled for March 6th, 2010! It will once again be held at the lovely Monarch Event Center in Austin, Texas.

Part-Time Comic Creators Share Their Stories in New Podcast

What happens when two comic creators team up to share their ideas? No, we're not talking about the latest hero-inspired silver screen summer blockbuster. We're talking about Keith Quinn, founder of Local Heroes™ and Anthony Rezendes, owner of Cranium Comics™ and their new joint venture, the Part-Time Comics podcast.

The idea for Part-Time Comics began as a conversation between both Quinn and Rezendes over lunch earlier in the year. They were already sharing their indie web and print comic publishing experiences with one another, but felt their discussions had broader appeal.

"We talked about our creation processes, and how we've tried to be successful without quitting our day jobs," said Quinn. "Creating a podcast that could potentially help other people trying to accomplish similar goals, while also driving the two of us toward our own goals, seemed like a great idea."

The podcast centers around both Quinn and Rezendes developing their own projects while gearing up for the 2010 Staple! Independent Media Expo in Austin, Texas. Because each is pursuing their goals a little differently, they each hope to shed some light on two distinct avenues for success.

"Something like this is great for me because it helps me stay on track so far as meeting my goals" Rezendes said. "Also, it's easier if you have a 'spotter'—someone who can keep you focused and on task as they are going through the same sorts of things. I think Keith and I can provide that for each other."

Discussions topic will include size and format of comics, web sites, printers, distribution, and marketing techniques, all from a "do it yourself" perspective. The underlying idea of taking the financial bootstrapping approach—essentially creating something with no financial resources from external investors—appeals to both of them.

"For the time being, we realize we're not going to be making much money off of our efforts, if any," Rezendes said. "Right now, it's about following your passion, doing what you love, and making time for your ideas to help them grow."

The first Part-Time Comics podcast was released on Friday, June 12, with a new episode to be shared every other Friday thereafter. New episodes will be shared through Talkshoe.com and iTunes as they become available.

Was it really just last week? Thanks to Uncle Staple and all the organizers, other exhibitors, and everyone who came to the show.

7000 BC's second STAPLE! was an amazing time. The crowd that comes to this show is always terrific, and we always wind up meeting some great people.

Possibly did even worse than last year documenting this, but a few photos below (click for larger); our friend Rob and our neighbor Jennifer on the end there.

Thanks to everyone we met and just everyone! The place was so good-vibes! It is a joy to be part of this very Austin-bunch.
